YEAR 11 NCEA LEVEL ONE

Year 11 students will enter NCEA Level 1. This is a base level qualification and indicates a student’s achievement in a range of curriculum areas, usually in their third year of secondary schooling. In order to qualify for a Level 1 National Certificate, students must gain 60 credits and the literacy and numeracy co-requisite credits.

In 2024, the literacy and numeracy co-requisite credits can be achieved through the external standards offered or through a select number of internal achievement standards.

Students studying Level 1 NCEA are encouraged to take a wide range of subjects ensuring they continue with a broad education and leave doors open for future pathways.

Subject Selection Guidelines

  • All year 11 students must study 6 subjects, but select 8 to ensure timetable fit.
  • All year 11 students must study ENGLISH & MATHS. You will be put in the subject by teacher recommendation. This can only be changed by discussion with the Leader of Learning.
  • Choose FOUR more subjects that you would like to do.
  • Choose TWO ‘backup subjects’.
  • Select ALL subjects carefully as YOU MAY GET ANY COMBINATION OF YOUR CHOICES, depending on timetable constraints and/or numbers.

YEAR 12 NCEA LEVEL TWO

Year 12 students will enter NCEA Level 2, or a combination of Levels 1 and 2. Students will study 6 subjects for NCEA Level 2. In order to qualify for a Level 2 National Certificate, students must gain 60 credits at Level 2 or higher. Students must also have completed the literacy and numeracy co-requisites.

Students will be required to gain 14 or more credits in a course at Achieved, Merit or Excellence (including at least 3 external and 3 internal credits) to gain a course endorsement. Certificate endorsement requires 50 or more credits at Merit or Excellence level.

To undertake many post-school options, Level 2 Literacy is required. This consists of 10 credits from specific standards, 5 of which must be in Reading and 5 in Writing. Check with your English teacher for details.

Students, with assistance from Ngā Puna Leaders, teachers, academic advisors, careers advisors and parents/caregivers will select the course to best meet their needs.

Subject Selection guidelines

  • Students study a total of 6  subjects – but must select 8 subjects to ensure timetable fit. Please select in order of preference, with your first subject being the one that you most want to do.
  • There are no compulsory subjects but English and Mathematics are strongly recommended.
  • It is strongly recommended that students select a balance between Arts/Technology and Science/Maths subjects to ensure flexibility should their career aspirations alter in the future.
  • Students selecting any National Certificate Course must complete 12LIT or 13LIT. These courses offer standards required to complete National Certificates AND meet NCEA Level 2 Literacy requirements.

If there is a possibility that a student will go to University or Polytechnic to complete a degree course, or if he/she has the ability and desire to study at the highest level, they should consider the following guidelines:

  • Five of the subjects should be from the ‘Approved Subject List’. This will prepare them for the rigours of University study in the future.

YEAR 13 NCEA LEVEL THREE

Year 13 students will enter NCEA Level 3, or a combination of Levels 1, 2, and 3 depending on their individual progress to date. Students will study 5 subjects for NCEA Level 3. In order to qualify for a Level 3 National Certificate students must gain 60 credits at Level 3 or higher.

Students aiming to complete a Bachelor’s Degree at a University or Polytechnic are strongly advised to take 5 NCEA ‘Approved Subjects’ at Years 12 and 13. This will ensure that students are well prepared for the rigours of tertiary study. Some Degree courses have specific requirements for entry, so please check with your Career Advisors regarding these.

If you are unsure of what course you might undertake when leaving school make sure you take a variety of approved subjects to keep your options open.

Subject Selection guidelines

If there is a possibility that a student will go to University or Polytechnic to complete a degree course, or if they have the ability and desire to study at the highest level, they should consider the following guidelines:

  • Students study a total of 5 subjects, but must select 7, in order of preference to ensure timetable fit with your first subject being the one that you most want to do. Students will also have 1 study line.
  • 5 subjects must be from the ‘Approved Subject list’ (refer to the University Entrance page).
  • If Level 2 Literacy requirements have not, or will not be met, please discuss your English options with the English Leader of Learning.

If students are considering attending Polytechnic or Private Tertiary Providers to complete Diploma/Certificate courses, applying for Traineeships/Apprenticeships or seeking Employment, they should consider:

  • Students study a total of 5 subjects, but select 7 subjects to ensure timetable fit. Students will also have 1 study line.
  • Please select in order of preference, with your first subject being the one you most want to do.
  • Students selecting any ‘School’ National Certificate Course must complete 12LIT or 13LIT. These courses offer standards required to complete National Certificates AND meet NCEA Level 2 Literacy requirements.
  • As a guideline, students will not be able to take more than 3 subjects from the same learning area.
  • Students can complete Level 2 and 3 single-line ‘Schools’ in one year e.g. 12ECE & 13ECE, 12TOU & 13TOU.

Practical skills combined with design and CAD skills will develop to a level that prepares them for even more advanced projects in Year 10. Safety is very important and students are expected to comply with the safety rules and regulations.

    MIXED MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY (9MMT)
