Year 13 Camp

Wednesday 31st Jan – Friday 2nd Feb Year 13 students and some staff attended the Year 13 Camp at Ngamuwahine at the base of the Kaimai ranges.

Luxurious in terms of school camps but still sleeping in dorms with bunk beds and eating on trestle tables outside.  We were extremely well fed throughout the three days by the amazing Cooks Ruth and Gail, with students pitching in to help out with the preparation, dishing up and cleaning up at the end of the yummy meals.

There was a large range of activities undertaken over the three days including the inaugural 2018 Camp Challenge down by the river, which included: Slingshot, Walking the Plank, Tug of War.  In addition, our Year 13 students prepared for the powhiri to welcome Year 9 students, new international students and new staff on the 5th February under the leadership of our Year 13 Māori students.

The Heads of House played an important role on camp, running activities with the Year 13 students to hone their leadership skills to help them support their Small Group Leader by running activities during Small Group time.

A highlight of the camp occurred on Thursday 1st February, when the whole staff came out to camp. It was great to see staff and students working alongside one another in a range of activities including: Flying Fox, Spider Web and Electric Fence and Academic Goal Setting.

Despite the weather, spirits were high and students and staff worked well together and forged strong supportive relationships, helping to set them up for a successful year.

The camp concert is always another highlight of the Year 13 Camp, which provide the Arts Leaders with the opportunity to lead the event.  Staff are always amazed at how talented our students are.

Friday arrived, the day when the House Leaders were announced.  This was a difficult decision for staff, as there were so many strong candidates for the ten positions.  Following the announcements and lunch, students and staff packed up and travelled back to Te Puke High School.

Congratulations to all those who attended the Year 13 Camp.  In three short but action-filled days, our Year 13 students were able to transform into a highly functioning, supportive group who definitely ‘Leaned Into’ Camp.  The challenge now is to keep up this momentum and ensure that your whole cohort is carried along on the crest of the wave that you have started for all of 2018.

Thank you to those staff who came out for the three days of camp, without your enthusiasm and hard work the camp would not have been the success it was.
